Favorite Furniture

Do you have a favorite piece of furniture?
There are several items I really love that I've collected over the years but this Chinoiserie piece made of burl wood brings me joy every day.
When Meryl Streep's character in Out of Africa arrived with so many crates and simply said, "I like my things." It struck a chord with me and is a sentiment I hold as well. In the memoir, Strangers Tend To Tell Me Things by Amy Dickinson she quotes her mother as saying, "My things never let me down." Couldn't agree more. :)
Not only do I love the detail and perfect size of this piece, it is special because I bought it from my favorite interior design professor. He is a very successful, long time designer in the New York metropolitan area and it brings back memories from his fascinating classes, impeccable taste and kindness. It was such a treat to go to Greenbaum's original location and discover this treasure and work with him personally. I hope your surroundings and treasures bring you joy as well!

Tolix chairs

Although I've seen these chairs in cafes and coffee shops, it wasn't until learning about the design of Eggshell Bistro that my interest was really peaked and now I'm slightly obsessed. The chair was designed in 1934 by a Frenchman named Xavier Pauchard. In 1907, Pauchard discovered he could prevent sheet metal from rusting by galvanizing it. Shortly after, he began making steel household goods, eventually registering his trademark as Tolix, which is the name of the company to this day. The chairs were originally designed to be all-weather outdoor chairs, but can be found in private homes and public spaces indoors and out. The company was family owned until 2004. The Tolix chair is in the MoMA, the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Vitra design collection in Weil am Rhein, Germany.
They are versatile, durable, stackable and comfortable. Antiquaire offers them in any color. The cost is about $275 each with vintage costing more. Knock-offs are available for about $135.
Would love a set of these for my kitchen!

Lucite

Modern furniture has never really been my style but since I began studying design my taste has certainly become more diverse.  A love for high and low, vintage and new and eclectic looks has begun to develop.  This Philippe Starck Louis Ghost chair was paired with an antique desk recently and I thought it looked great!

Chairloom

From what I have seen of Chairloom, they do beautiful work.  As someone who is crazy for great fabric, their furniture is exciting.  I learned of them through the Virginia Johnson blog.  They will also be at the Brooklyn Flea this month--can't wait to see some of the chairs in person. Molly Worth works with a family run business that has been doing reupholstery for three generations.  She is based in Philadelphia.

Elle Decor is a favorite of mine so I am sharing images from their website today.  As a movie buff, it is always fun to see the interiors and details of the houses, apartments and set designs used in favorite films.  All images are of Carrie + Big's apartment.
Love the colors in this room and the views through the double doors.  The yellow artwork is striking.
Terrific neutrals used in this dining room--chair fabric, table and light fixture are gorgeous.
This room looks so luxe with the layers of patterns, fabrics and window treatments.
Who wouldn't love this closet?  Beautiful!

mirrored furniture

Mirrored furniture keeps jumping out at me.  When done on a traditional profile, it looks so glam and adds something special to a room.

I would love to add a chair to our living room and one to our guest room.  Came across these from Target quite by accident.  Aren't they stylish?
